What is AC Motor? AC Motor is an electric motor powered by an alternating current. The AC motor commonly consists of 2 main parts; an outside stationary stator having coils supplied with alternating current to produce a rotating magnetic field and an inside rotor attached to the output shaft producing a second rotating magnetic field. The rotor magnetic field may be produced by permanent magnets, reluctance saliency, DC or AC electrical windings. There are different types of AC motors and each has their own specific applications.
There are 2 types of electric motors; the AC motor and DC Motor. For AC motors, there are 2 types; Synchronous motor and Asynchronous motor. Asynchronous or induction motor are also divided into 2 types; Single phase motor and three-phase motor.
Asynchronous motor has the rotor rotating at the sea speed as the speed of rotation of the stator current. They sometimes act as a synchronous condenser, to improve the power factor of the local grid it is connected to. These motors are used in high precision positioning devices such as robots and they can also act as a stepper motor. An asynchronous motor is the common form of motor used in everyday life such as pumping water to a tank to power plant boiler feed pumps. These AC motors are very flexible to use and match the load demand for almost every application. The most commonly used induction motors are very important for many industries due to their load-bearing capacity and flexibility. They are used generally for various types of pumps, compressors and acts as a prime mover for many types of machinery.
AC motors can find their usage in 2 forms based on their power supply. Single-phase motor and 3 phase motor. The single-phase motors are found in their use in low power requirements or domestic appliances like ceiling fans, portable power tools, mixer grinders, etc. The 3 phase motors are generally found in high power requirements like power drives for compressors, hydraulic pumps, air conditioning compressors, irrigation pumps and many more.
